Instagram image sizes
| Format | Ratio | Recommended size |
|---|---|---|
| Square post | 1:1 | 1080 × 1080 |
| Portrait post | 4:5 | 1080 × 1350 |
| Tall portrait | 3:4 | 1080 × 1440 |
| Landscape post | 1.91:1 | 1080 × 566 |
| Story / Reel | 9:16 | 1080 × 1920 |
Tips
- 4:5 takes the most room in the feed of the classic post ratios, so it gets more attention than square or landscape.
- Profile grid previews are cropped to a taller 3:4 window — keep the subject centered.
- Stories: leave about 250 px clear at the top and bottom for the profile bar and reply box.

Frequently asked questions
Why does Instagram crop my photo?
Posts must fall between 1.91:1 (landscape) and 4:5 (portrait). Taller or wider photos get cropped to fit.
What resolution should I upload?
1080 pixels wide. Instagram downsizes bigger images and upscales smaller ones, which can blur them.
Can I post a full vertical photo without cropping?
Not in the feed — 4:5 (or 3:4) is the tallest. Use a Story or add borders to fit a 9:16 image inside 4:5.
