The story safe zone
Your profile picture and name sit over the top ~250 px and the reply bar and stickers sit over the bottom ~250 px. Keep text, faces and logos inside the middle 1080 × 1420 px — turn on Show safe area to see it.
Posting a landscape photo to your story
Choose Fit (no crop) and Blurred. The full photo sits in the middle with a soft, blurred copy filling the top and bottom — the same look Instagram uses when you share a post, but you control the framing.

Why does Instagram crop my story photo?
