Which shape should you use?
- Portrait 4:5 (1080×1350) fills the most screen in the feed, so it gets the most attention. It's the best default for photos.
- 3:4 (1080×1440) matches the profile grid, which switched from squares to 3:4 rectangles in 2025; in the feed it's shown at 4:5.
- Square 1:1 still works everywhere and is safest for carousels mixing shapes — all slides in a carousel use the first slide's ratio.
- Landscape 1.91:1 is the widest Instagram allows; anything wider gets cropped.
Why Instagram makes photos blurry
Instagram re-compresses everything. Uploading exactly 1080 px wide avoids an extra resize on their side, which keeps the photo sharper. Uploading a 4000 px original gives Instagram more work, not more quality. On iPhone, also turn on Settings → Media quality → “Upload at highest quality” in the Instagram app.
