UK passport photo maker (35×45 mm)

Updated Nothing is uploaded

HM Passport Office asks for a 35 × 45 mm photo with the head between 29 and 34 mm from chin to crown, on a plain light grey or cream background. Online applications use a digital photo instead — you can download that here too.

Rules from GOV.UK — Photos for passports. Final acceptance is always up to the issuing authority.

How to make your UK passport photo online

  1. Choose the size and upload a front-facing photo (JPG, PNG or iPhone HEIC).
  2. Click the top of your head and then your chin. The photo is scaled so your head is exactly the required height.
  3. Fine-tune by dragging and zooming until every check is green. Adjust brightness or lighten the background if needed.
  4. Download the single photo for online forms, or a 4×6 in print sheet (or A4/Letter) and print it at a photo lab or at home.

United Kingdom photo requirements

Size35 mm wide × 45 mm high — the standard UK size.
Head size29 mm to 34 mm from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head (crown).
BackgroundPlain cream or light grey. Not white, and no patterns or shadows.
GlassesYou should not wear glasses. If you must for medical reasons, include a signed statement; eyes must be fully visible with no glare.
ExpressionPlain expression, mouth closed, eyes open and looking straight at the camera.
How recentTaken within the last month.
Head coveringsNo head coverings unless for religious or medical reasons; your face from chin to forehead must be visible.
Important: A white wall often reads as bright white and gets rejected. Use the background option, which tints the backdrop light grey rather than white.
  • Paper applications need 2 identical printed photos; one is signed on the back by a countersignatory if required.
  • Children under 6 don't need a neutral expression; babies under 1 don't need open eyes.
  • Photos must not be cut from a larger photo or edited.

How to take a passport photo at home

  • Light: face a window in daylight, or use two lamps either side of the camera. Avoid a single overhead light — it casts shadows under the eyes and chin.
  • Background: stand about 1 m (3 ft) in front of a plain white or light-grey wall so your shadow falls behind you, not on the wall.
  • Camera: ask someone to hold the phone at eye level about 1.2–1.5 m away and use the normal 1× lens. Selfies at arm's length make noses look bigger and can be rejected.
  • Pose: shoulders square, head straight, hair behind the ears, no hat. Take several shots and pick the sharpest.
  • Leave room: include your shoulders and space above your head. The tool crops it down — it can't add what isn't there.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a UK passport photo?

35 mm wide by 45 mm high, with the head 29–34 mm tall. That's about 413 × 531 px at 300 DPI.

Can I take a UK passport photo at home?

Yes. For online applications you can upload your own digital photo; for paper forms you need two identical prints, which you can make from the 4×6 sheet.

Can the background be white?

GOV.UK asks for plain cream or light grey. Pure white backgrounds can cause the face edges to wash out, so light grey is safest.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. Cropping, adjustments and the print sheet are all made in your browser. Your photo never leaves your device and nothing is stored.
