PNG to ICO converter
Updated Nothing is uploaded
Create a real multi-resolution .ico file — for a website favicon, a Windows shortcut or a desktop app — from any PNG, JPG or SVG. Transparency is preserved and you choose exactly which sizes go inside.
How to convert PNG to ICO
- Choose your PNG (a square image of at least 256 × 256 works best).
- Tick the sizes you need: 16, 32 and 48 for favicons; add 256 for Windows app icons.
- Choose PNG encoding (smaller) or BMP (for very old software).
- Press Download .ico.
Which sizes to include
| Use | Sizes |
|---|---|
| Website favicon.ico | 16, 32, 48 |
| Windows desktop / taskbar icon | 16, 24, 32, 48, 64, 256 |
| Windows app (.exe) icon | 16, 20, 24, 32, 40, 48, 64, 96, 256 |
| Folder or shortcut icon | 16, 32, 48, 256 |
Windows picks the closest size for each place it shows an icon and scales it otherwise, so including the common sizes keeps it sharp. 256 px is the maximum an ICO entry can store.
Pre-drawn small sizes
Designers often hand-tune the 16 and 32 px versions so lines snap to pixels. Add all your versions at once — for each size, the tool uses the smallest image that is at least that big, so your hand-drawn 16 px art isn't replaced by a blurry downscale of the large logo.
PNG vs. BMP inside an ICO
An ICO file is a small directory of images. Since Windows Vista, entries may be stored as compressed PNG, which is much smaller and is what every browser expects. BMP entries (32-bit with alpha plus a 1-bit mask) are bigger but open in very old programs and some icon editors.
Private by design
Everything runs in your browser — your images are never uploaded, stored or seen by anyone.

Frequently asked questions
Can I just rename a .png to .ico?
Some browsers will display it, but it isn't a real ICO: Windows and many tools reject it, and it holds only one size. Converting builds a proper ICO container.
Is transparency kept?
Yes. Transparent pixels stay transparent in both PNG and BMP encoding.
What's the maximum ICO size?
256 × 256 pixels per image. Larger sources are scaled down.
My image isn't square — what happens?
Choose "Fit with padding" to keep the whole image on a transparent square, or "Crop to square" to fill it.
