A 2 × 2 inch photo is the US passport format — 51 × 51 mm, 600 × 600 pixels at 300 DPI — with the head 1 to 1⅜ in tall. It's also used for US visas, green card and citizenship forms, Indian applications abroad and Philippine IDs. Make one here and print six on a single 4×6.
- 50.8×50.8 mm
- Head 25.4–34.9 mm
- white or off-white
Rules from U.S. Department of State — Passport photo requirements. Final acceptance is always up to the issuing authority.
How to make a 2×2 photo
- Choose your country and document and upload a front-facing photo (JPG, PNG or iPhone HEIC).
- Click the top of your head and then your chin. The photo is scaled so your head is exactly the required height.
- Fine-tune by dragging and zooming until every check is green. Adjust brightness or lighten the background if needed.
- Download the single photo for online forms, or a 4×6 in print sheet (or A4/Letter) and print it at a photo lab or at home.
What uses 2×2 photos
| Document | Notes |
|---|---|
| US passport (DS-11, DS-82) | Head 1–1⅜ in, eyes 1⅛–1⅜ in from the bottom, white background, no glasses. |
| US visa (DS-160) and DV Lottery | Digital 600×600 px JPEG ≤240 KB, plus a print for some interviews. |
| Green card, citizenship and work permit (USCIS) | USCIS forms such as I-130, I-485, I-765 and N-400 use 2 passport-style 2×2 photos. Write your name and A-number lightly in pencil on the back. |
| Indian passport/OCI abroad | Indian missions in the US and many other countries ask for 2×2 in on white. |
| Philippine IDs | NBI, PRC and many job requirements; white background. |
2×2 photo math
2 inches × 300 dots per inch = 600 pixels on each side. The head must be 1 to 1⅜ in, which is 300–413 px, or 50–69% of the photo height. A 4×6 in print is 1200 × 1800 px, so exactly 2 columns × 3 rows of 600 px photos fit with no wasted space.
How to take a passport photo at home
- Light: face a window in daylight, or use two lamps either side of the camera. Avoid a single overhead light — it casts shadows under the eyes and chin.
- Background: stand about 1 m (3 ft) in front of a plain white or light-grey wall so your shadow falls behind you, not on the wall.
- Camera: ask someone to hold the phone at eye level about 1.2–1.5 m away and use the normal 1× lens. Selfies at arm's length make noses look bigger and can be rejected.
- Pose: shoulders square, head straight, hair behind the ears, no hat. Take several shots and pick the sharpest.
- Leave room: include your shoulders and space above your head. The tool crops it down — it can't add what isn't there.
